The disastrous cold weather in South America has cost up to now to at least 185 people the life. Since weeks icy temperatures rule in parts of the subcontinent. The situation in Peru is especially dramatic. Only in the south of the Andes state the authorities registered during the last days 112 deaths as local media reported. There the thermometer falls here and there up to below 20 degrees centigrade. The Peruvian authority count on other deaths, because presently about 19,000 people suffer from breath way illnesses.
In Argentina 16 people froze to death up to now, 13 died of carbon monoxide poisoning which was caused by defective heatings.
From Bolivia 20 cold victims are announced. Nine people died in the south of Brazil as a result of the cold, in each case two people in Uruguay and Chile. Up to now in Paraguay the authorities have registered nine dead person and three dead people by carbon monoxide poisoning.
